Description

Helsingin yliopiston Kiihdytinlaboratorio käyttää materiaalifysiikan perustutkimuksiin elektronin antihiukkasia, positroneja. Positronit ovat antimateriaa, joka täytyy erikseen tuottaa käyttöön juuri sillä hetkellä, kun tutkimusta tehdään. Tällä hetkellä Kiihdytinlaboratoriossa on käytössä radioaktiivisiin säteilylähteisiin perustuvia positronilähteitä, joiden käytössä on ongelmia: 1) Lähdettä ei pysty kytkemään pois päältä, kun sitä ei tarvita, jolloin lähde aiheuttaa jatkuvan säteilyriskin. 2) Tekninen ratkaisu, joka liittyy energiasäädeltyjen positronien tuottoon radioaktiivisella lähteellä, on tehoton, jolloin käytettävän säteilylähteen aktiivisuus on oltava erittäin suuri, mikä kasvattaa sekä jatkuvaa että käytönaikaista säteilyriskiä. Yllä mainittuja säteilyn aiheuttamia riskejä pienentääkseen Helsingin yliopisto siirtyy käyttämään sähköistä positronigeneraattoria, jonka käyttö ei perustu radioaktiivisiin säteilylähteisiin. Lisäksi sähköisestä positronigeneraattorista saadaan energiasäädeltyjä positroneja suuremmalla taajuudella kuin nykyisillä teknisillä ratkaisuilla on mahdollista, mikä tehostaa tutkimusta. Tällä hetkellä sähköisiä positronigeneraattoreita valmistaa vain yksi yritys maailmassa, generaattorin tekniikan kehittänyt ja patentoinut yritys Posithôt (Sceaux, Ranska). Hankintaan liittyy 5 vuoden huoltosopimus, joka voidaan hankkia vain Posithôt-yritykseltä, koska mikään muu toimittaja ei tunne laitteen toiminnan yksityiskohtia.
