Description

ECMWF, as the Entrusted Entity for the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), entered into a contract for activities to support climate reanalysis by extending the coverage and quality of input data from the data-sparse past, as well as supporting the integration of this new data in the ECMWF Integrated Forecasting System (IFS). This contract builds on prior Copernicus data rescue efforts and aims to support the integration of key historical satellite datasets into ECMWF’s ERA6 climate reanalysis. The first objective of the Framework Agreement is to assist with data ingestion and run assimilation experiments for six high-impact datasets (including IRIS, PMR, SIRS, SCR, NEMS, SCAMS, and VTPR) to prepare for ERA6 back extension runs starting in 2026. The second objective is to continue data rescue by consolidating earlier datasets and processing data from four newly identified historical instruments. The work leverages the team's established expertise and dataset familiarity to ensure timely delivery of outputs critical for climate model improvement, particularly in upper atmospheric and data-sparse regions.
