Description

ECMWF, as one of the Entrusted Entities for the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative, entered into contract for the provision of configurable regional AI modeling capability The objective of this Agreement is for the development and delivery of a production-ready, open-source regional AI forecasting capability for Destination Earth, designed to provide kilometre-scale, probabilistic and hourly forecasts over configurable European domains for at least five days ahead. The service will support the prediction of high-impact weather events and environmental extremes by combining advanced machine-learning methods, high-resolution regional datasets, ensemble forecasting, and additional Earth system components such as land-surface and ocean-wave processes. Implemented within the Anemoi framework and integrated with the DestinE Digital Twin Engine and Forecast-in-a-Box workflows, the capability will be engineered, validated and deployed to TRL 8 or higher on EuroHPC and AI Factory infrastructures, complementing the physics-based regional Extremes Digital Twin and strengthening Europe’s operational forecasting capacity.
