Bei der geplanten Frankenhalle handelt es sich um einen Neubau einer 3-Feld Sporthalle, überwiegend für den Schulbetrieb des Schulzentrums am Sund (auch Campus am Sund genannt) vorgesehen. Der vorhandene Standort der Schule liegt am Rande der historischen Altstadt, am Übergang zur Frankenvorstadt. Beide Stadtteile sind bevölkerungsreich und gut erschlossen. Das „Schulzentrum am Sund“ ist eine Kooperative Gesamtschule (KGS), in der der regionale und der gymnasiale Schulteil gleichberechtigt in einem sozialen und pädagogischen Verbund zusammenarbeiten und leben. Ziel des Bauvorhabens ist die Errichtung einer modernen, barrierefreien 3-Feld-Sporthalle für ca. 1000 Schülerinnen und Schüler der 5. bis 12. Klassen für das Schulzentrum am Sund. Die Hansestadt Stralsund plant den Neubau dieser 3-Feld-Sporthalle auf einem Nachbargrundstück neben dem Schulzentrum „Am Sund“. Grundlage der Planung für den Neubau einer 3-Feld-Sporthalle ist die Entwicklung einer modernen und zeitgemäßen Sporthalle unter Berücksichtigung der Anforderungen an Barrierefreiheit, Schulsport, Förderunterricht, Ganztagsbetreuung und Freizeitsport. Das zur Verfügung stehende Baugrundstück grenzt unmittelbar an die südliche Grundstücksgrenze des Schulcampus. Westlich des Baugrundstückes schließt sich eine vier-, teilweise fünfgeschossige Wohnbebauung an, südlich eine zwei- bis viergeschossige Wohn- bzw. Gewerbebebauung. An der östlichen Grundstückskante ist die Errichtung eines zukünftigen Rad-und Gehweges geplant und in den weiteren Planungen zu berücksichtigen. Das Grundstück ist versorgungstechnisch weitgehend erschlossen. Im Zuge der Neuplanung sind einige öffentliche Versorgungsträger neu an den Standort heranzuführen. Die 3-Feld-Sporthalle soll gemäß DIN ein Spielfeld mit 45,0 x 27,0 m, durch zwei Trennvorhänge unterteilbar in 3 Spielfelder mit 27 x 15 m, erhalten. Umlaufend ist eine Prallwand geplant. Der Fußboden wird kraftabbauend als Holz-Schwingboden bzw. flächenelastischer Fußboden ausgeführt. Die lichte Sporthallenhöhe soll 7,0 m betragen. Die Sporthalle ist für Sportarten im Wettkampfbetrieb nach DIN 18032 vorgesehen.
