Bisher umfasste die Erhebung eine Stichprobe von rund 14‘000 Arbeitsstätten pro Jahr, die direkt erhoben wurden, und knapp 5‘000 Arbeitsstätten, deren Daten von zentralen Stellen geliefert werden (sogenannte „Spezialfälle“: Unternehmungen mit Arbeitsstättenliste, Bundesbetriebe, Grossverbraucher des Bundes). Für die Ziehung der Arbeitsstätten aus dem Betriebs- und Unternehmensregister der Schweiz (BUR) und für das Hochrechnungsverfahren ist seit 2002 das Bundesamt für Statistik (BFS) verantwortlich. Das Mandat für diese Erhebung wurde letztmals im Dezember 2015 ausgeschrieben und wird nun nach Ablauf der Vertragsdauer erneut ausgeschrieben. Ab Referenzjahr (RJ) 2027 soll der Energieverbrauch jährlich weiterhin bei rund 14‘000 Arbeitsstätten direkt erhoben werden. Die Vertragsdauer des hier ausgeschriebenen Mandates beträgt fünf Jahre mit Option auf jährliche Verlängerung für maximal weitere fünf Jahre. Die Vorbereitungen beginnen in der Regel im August des Referenzjahres. Für die erste Erhebungsrunde muss mit einem erhöhten Aufwand gerechnet werden.
