The district town of Merzig aims to provide full-coverage access to gigabit networks, strengthen its business location and ensure the competitiveness of its companies. It therefore intends to conclude a concession contract with a telecommunications company for the construction and operation of gigabit networks and the provision of end-customer services, covering underserved addresses ('grey spots') under the economic gap model. The town has applied for and received provisional funding under the federal Gigabit Directive 2.0 programme and has also been granted provisional co-financing under the Saarland Gigabit co-financing directive.
