Die 1. Baustufe der Nord-Süd Stadtbahn Köln führt unterirdisch vom Breslauer Platz bis zur Marktstraße (ca. 3.900 m), während die 2. Baustufe unterirdisch hinter der Haltestelle Bonner Wall im Verlauf der 1. Baustufe abzweigt, vor der Rheinuferstraße an die Oberfläche kommt und an die Bestandstrecke anbindet (ca. 772 m). Der als 3. Baustufe bezeichnete Abschnitt schließt an die bereits im Zuge der 1. Baustufe hergestellte oberirdische Haltestelle Marktstraße an, verläuft in oberirdischer Lage und endet nach ca. 2.100 m am Bonner Verteiler. Die Endhaltestelle (Arnoldshöhe) befindet sich nördlich des Verteilerkreises Süd, sodass sich eine Gleistrasse von ca. 1.950 m ergibt. Es ist eine zweigleisige Gleisanlage als besonderer Bahnkörper in Mittellage der Bonner Straße geplant. Die Gleistrassierung verläuft bis auf die Verziehungsbereiche an den Haltestellen weitestgehend gerade und parallel zu den Fahrbahnachsen. Am Ende der Ausbaustrecke ist vor der Endhaltestelle ein doppelter Gleiswechsel auf einem gelagerten Masse-Feder-System angeordnet. Die Gleisbaumaßnahme wird in zwei Baulose auf Höhe des Knotenpunktes Bonner Straße/Bayenthalgürtel unterteilt. Dabei behandelt Los 1 den nördlichen Bauabschnitt, Los 2 den südlichen Bauabschnitt.
