Het gaat om zowel een apotheek met een cleanroom voor de bereidingen van medicatie als een distributieapotheek van waaruit medicijnen vertrekken naar de ziekenhuissites. Met de nieuwe centrale apotheek stoomt ZAS zich klaar voor de nieuwe regelgeving. In België gelden vanaf dan strengere normen voor ziekenhuisapotheken die medicatie produceren. Die zijn gebaseerd op PIC/S (Pharmaceutical Inspection Co-operation Scheme), een internationale organisatie die samenwerkt op het vlak van farmaceutische inspecties en het vaststellen van normen voor de kwaliteitscontrole en -verzekering van farmaceutische producten. De productieapotheek met een cleanroom is een hoogtechnologische omgeving die instaat voor de centrale bereiding van patiënt- en studiemedicatie. Op jaarbasis gaat het om honderdduizend magistrale en steriele bereidingen. Magistrale bereidingen zijn bijvoorbeeld zalfjes, siropen en capsules zoals ook de officina-apotheek die bereidt. Bij de steriele bereidingen gaat het om oogdruppels, intraveneuze chemotherapie en antibiotica. Voor de steriele - en vaak toxische - bereidingen gelden strenge beschermingsvereisten voor de bereider. Deze steriele bereidingen worden gemaakt in de cleanroom: een heel zuivere werkomgeving waarin zuivere lucht is gegarandeerd. Zo komt er geen vuil zoals stofjes en vezels in het productieproces. Vanuit de productieapotheek gaat de medicatie vervolgens naar de verschillende ziekenhuissites. De distributieapotheek is de logistieke omgeving waar geneesmiddelen, implantaten en medisch materiaal in bulk geleverd worden. Vervolgens worden ze via geautomatiseerde processen opgeslagen. Nadien volgt de herverpakking en verdeling naar de verschillende ziekenhuissites. Op jaarbasis gaat het om veertien miljoen stuks. Geneesmiddelen in blister worden bijvoorbeeld herverpakt tot op eenheidsdosisniveau voor de verdeling aan individuele patiënten in het ziekenhuis. Door deze werkwijze is de volledige traceerbaarheid tot en met de toediening aan de patiënt gegarandeerd.
