Das Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung (rechtsfähige Stiftung) - im folgenden MPI KOFO genannt -ist ein überwiegend aus öffentlichen Mitteln gefördertes und gemeinnütziges Forschungsinstitut. Das MPI KOFO betreibt Grundlagenforschung in allen Gebieten der Katalyse und ist gegliedert in sechs wissenschaftliche Abteilungen: Organische Synthese, Homogene Katalyse, Heterogene Katalyse, Nachhaltige Katalyse, Metallorganische Chemie und Molekulare Theorie und Spektroskopie. Sie werden von Servicegruppen unterstützt, welche modernste Analytik, effiziente IT und exzellente Technik in spezialisierten Werkstätten zur Verfügung stellen.
