Zur Aufrechterhaltung des Bahnnetzzustands erneuert die SBB jedes Jahr 150 bis 200 Kilometer Gleisinfrastruktur. Der Rahmenvertrag «Generalplaner - Fahrbahnerneuerungen 2029-2033» (Kurzbezeichnung «NKM - GP») bezweckt, Volumenschwankungen im Projektportfolio für die Ausführungsjahre 2029 bis 2033 abzufedern. Er umfasst Fahrbahnerneuerungen in einer Grössenordnung von rund 20 km pro Jahr, einschliesslich Weichen sowie der zugehörigen technischen Fachdisziplinen. Die SBB beabsichtigt, 20 bis 30% des Projektportfolios nach der BIM-Methodik planen und ausführen zu lassen; der verbleibende Anteil wird konventionell bearbeitet. Das Projektvolumen verteilt sich voraussichtlich zu etwa 65% auf die Deutschschweiz, 25% auf die Romandie und 10% auf die italienischsprachige Schweiz. Als Generalplaner erbringt die Firma die Planung schweizweit für die SIA-Phasen 3 bis 5.
