Die Stadtwerke Flensburg GmbH betreibt auf dem Grundstück Batteriestraße 48 in 24939 Flensburg ein Heizkraftwerk zur Erzeugung von Strom und Fernwärme. An diesem Standort wurde im Jahr 2024 der Wärmespeicher 2 in Betrieb genommen. Dieser steht der Fernwärmeversorgung der Stadt Flensburg als Pufferspeicher mit einem Fassungsvermögen von rd. 29.000 m3 aufbereitetem Fernwärmewasser zur Verfügung. Ursprünglich wurde dieser Wärmespeicher parallel eingebunden zu dem bereits seit rd. 50 Jahren am Standort des Heizkraftwerks betriebenen Wärmespeicher 1. Nach Inbetriebnahme des Wärmespeichers 2 wurde eine Zustandsbewertung des Wärmespeichers 1 durchgeführt, welche ergab, dass eine Sanierung unter wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen nicht umsetzbar ist. Aus diesem Grund wird der Wärmespeicher 1 aktuell demontiert und planmäßig durch den am selben Standort neu zu errichtenden Wärmespeicher 3 ersetzt. Der Wärmespeicher 3 ist als druckloser Wärmespeicher mit Dampfpolster baugleich zu dem bereits am Standort betrieben Wärmespeicher 2 zu errichten. Dies bedeutet, dass eine Wärmespeicherkapazität von min. 900 MWh mit 98 °C maximaler Speichertemperatur und einer Rücklauftemperatur von 65 °C (Delta T 33°C) und darüber hinaus eine maximale Be- u. Entladeleistung von 90 MW zu realisieren ist. Die voraussichtlichen Abmaße des Speichers liegen bei einem Innendurchmesser von ca. 42 m und einer maximalen Füllhöhe von ca. 21 m. Aufgrund der parallelen Einbindung zu Wärmespeicher 2 ist in jedem Fall dieselbe geodätische Höhe des maximalen Füllstands bei beiden Speichern zu erreichen.
