The works comprise the redevelopment of the Grote Markt square in Aalst. A separated sewer system will be installed (separate foul and rainwater drainage), followed by resurfacing of the square with new natural stone paving, including house and street gully connections. The redevelopment includes new trees: the locations of 17 new open-crown trees will be carefully chosen in consultation with emergency services to coordinate access, events and the Saturday market. A 'Beoveld' system with underground drilling will provide natural heating and passive cooling for the belfry and old town hall. Works also include demolition, earthworks, foundations with infiltration pipes, water-gutter kerbstones, tree pits, street furniture (benches, flagpoles, lighting masts) and relocation of the Dirk Martens statue.
