Op dit moment kiezen studentensteden en hogeronderwijsinstellingen zelf of ze een kotlabel invoeren en verplichten. Ze bepalen ook zelf de voorwaarden voor dat label. Dat maakt het voor studenten en verhuurders weinig transparant om koten met elkaar te vergelijken en te weten of een kot kwaliteitsvol en brandveilig is. Een uniform kotlabel kan daaraan tegemoetkomen. Op dit moment kiezen studentensteden en hogere onderwijsinstellingen zelf of ze een kotlabel invoeren en verplichten. Ze bepalen ook zelf de voorwaarden voor dat label.
