Description

Ida-Viru is the just transition area in Estonia, with a mainly Russian-speaking population who still celebrate 9 May as Soviet/Russian victory day. In order to start changing this, the Rep, together with partners offered a solid and credible alternative in 2024: a big public concert was organized on 9 May with A-list performers specially loved by local people in Ida-Viru region. The aim was to change the narrative around 9 May - from Soviet / Russian victory day to a day celebrating peace in Europe. The event was a huge success with more people attending the Europe Day concert than those visiting the propaganda events on the other side of the river banks in Narva. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to continue with the started tradition and consolidate even further the understanding of Europe Day and the celebration of peace in Narva. In 2025 Russia will be celebrating the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War and huge propaganda events are expected on the other side of the river banks in Narva. As such, it is extremely important to continue contributing to the celebrations of Europe Day in Narva and make the event even more visible to the local people. It helps us to continue creating a new narrative around the 9th of May - to celebrate peace, not victory - and to deliver our common European values and messages: Europe starts in Narva and Europe day is a day for all of us, no matter our background. As such, in order to celebrate Europe Day on 9 May 2025, the EC Rep in Tallinn is planning to organize a public concert in Narva, Estonia.
