El ámbito de actuación de la intervención se encuentra situado en el entorno de la Plaza de San Esteban en la ciudad de Murcia. El emplazamiento cuenta con una singularidad, como es la existencia de un yacimiento arqueológico vivo, del arrabal andalusí de la Arrixaca. Se trata del antiguo arrabal de la medina de Murcia, conocido como “Arrixaca Nueva” o “Arrixaca de los cristianos”, de finales del siglo XI, que alcanzó su máximo esplendor a mediados del siglo XIII. Analizando el contexto histórico más cercano, el Conjunto de San Esteban, está constituido por el Palacio de San Esteban, la Iglesia de San Esteban y la Zona Arqueológica del Arrabal de la Arrixaca Nueva de Murcia; cada uno de estos bienes ha sido declarado de interés cultural. Desde el punto de vista del patrimonio histórico arqueológico, estos tres elementos se entienden como una única entidad. Se trata, por tanto, de un conjunto de indudable interés y localizado en pleno centro de la ciudad de Murcia.
