Het KMI beschikt over een continue tijdreeks van ozonsondemetingen sinds 1969, die van onschatbare waarde is voor het klimaatonderzoek en de monitoring van de ozonlaag in het kader van het VN-Montrealprotocol. Het KMI fungeert tevens als het officiële Quality Assurance/Science Activity Centre (QA/SAC) voor ozonsondes binnen de Wereld Meteorologische Organisatie (WMO).
