Assessment of health and environmental hazards and risks of surface treated nanomaterials

The aim of this study is to investigate and collect available scientific information on how a surface treatment can affect the properties of nanomaterials with further impact on their fate and potential hazards. To meet regulatory information requirements, it is essential for nanomaterials to be supplied with data on their hazard and potential risk to human health and environment. While more information is available on uncoated or non-modified nanomaterials commonly available on the market, there has been less focus on the systematic assessment of the same nanomaterials subjected to surface treatment, being either physical coating or chemical modification, partially because of the large variability of such approaches. To address the lack of consolidated data on the hazard profile of nanomaterials upon application of organic coatings and other surface treatments, the European Chemicals Agency expects to launch a call for tender to initiate a dedicated EUON survey under the service contract. A thorough review of existing literature and studies on surface-treated nanomaterials would address this knowledge gap. This study will provide specific knowledge on hazards linked to the surface treatment of nanomaterials and include evaluation of advanced testing methods for environmental and health risks (with assessment of occupational safety), and possible recommendations for implementation in the current legislation framework.
